Kimberly Jean Named August “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With Her Song “I Don’t Wanna Be Right”
By Dale Kawashima
Kimberly Jean, a promising, country singer & songwriter
based in Los Angeles, CA, has won the August SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of
The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “I Don’t Wanna Be
Right” (co-written by Peter Amato & Duncan Pain). This song is from her
upcoming 10-song CD, My Someday, which she will release independently in
September (2006).
Kimberly Jean
“I Don’t Wanna Be Right” is an elegant, soulful country
ballad, which provides an excellent showcase for Jean’s rich, expressive
vocals. The song’s arrangement has an intimate feel to it, and it’s easy to sit
back and enjoy listening to the graceful piano and string tracks. This song was
expertly produced by Peter Amato, who is known for his hit production work for
LeAnn Rimes (“Life Goes On”) and the Baha Men (“Who Let The Dogs Out”), and for
writing songs for Ricky Martin.
Jean grew up in Hillsboro, OR, and when she was 10, her
family moved to Baja, Mexico for their Christian missionary work. Both her
parents play guitar and sing, and they love country music. “I’ve been into
country music since I was little,” said Jean. “Three of my favorite artists are
Alan Jackson, Sara Evans and Sugarland.”
Jean developed her own musician skills at a young age,
learning to play piano, saxophone and flute, in addition to her singing. By age
11, she was performing regularly in her church, and later in high school (in Tehachapi, CA, near Bakersfield) she sang in the choir and began writing songs.

Currently a college student attending Cal State Northridge
(majoring in Kinesiology/Sports Medicine), Jean has simultaneously been
developing her music career, writing and recording songs for her album with
producer Peter Amato. “I met Pete this March (2006). I have a site on MySpace,
and Pete heard my music – he liked the tone of my voice. Soon after, we started
collaborating at his studio in Simi Valley. It’s been great working with Pete,
and with Duncan Pain, who co-wrote “I Don’t Wanna Be Right” with us.”
With her album My Someday nearly completed, Jean is
looking forward to releasing and promoting the CD, and putting together a band
and doing live shows. Her main goal is to be signed with a major label. And
with labels increasingly checking out a new artist’s popularity on MySpace,
Jean should be in a good position to impress. “The response to my music on MySpace
has been phenomenal,” she said. “MySpace is also terrific for getting good
feedback on songs. So far, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be Right’ has gotten the best
response.”
