Pop Singer/Writer Pearl Named March SingerUniverse “Best
Vocalist Of The Month”
By Dale Kawashima
Pearl, a talented, distinctive pop singer & writer based
in Los Angeles, CA, has won the March SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The
Month” Competition, for her performance of the song “Carry Me” (written by Noel
Cohen & Jenny Bruce). Pearl has begun writing and recording songs for her
solo CD project, and she has been working in conjunction with the A&R
Worldwide artist development company.
Pearl
“Carry Me” not only provides a showcase for Pearl’s
expressive, appealing vocal style, but also demonstrates her skills as an
imaginative arranger and producer. In addition to recording her own
compositions, she likes to find songs by other writers, and then create unique new arrangements and production which fit her own style and personality.
“I sifted through songs online and I fell in love with
‘Carry Me'," explained Pearl. “The song was originally in a more bluesy, roots
vein. I heard it as much more pop, and with gospel-style background vocals. I
started recording ‘Carry Me’ at my home studio with ProTools. And then Randy
Garcia played bass, drums and helped with the programming, and Phil Shanale
added the (sampled) orchestrations. They did a great job.”
Pearl was born in Las Vegas (her full name is Pearl Ross), and then she grew up in
Sacramento (CA) with her father. She learned to play piano and began writing
songs at a young age, although singing was always her number one priority.
Sadly, when she was 17 her father died of brain cancer, and her mother has also
since passed away.

After her father died and upon graduating from high school,
Pearl moved to San Francisco where she had friends, and to pursue her music
career. She trained as a recording engineer at studios, and she became skilled
at both digital and analog recording. In addition, Pearl co-wrote and
recorded songs with some dance producers, and she released some
vinyl remixes to the dance clubs.
Then a year ago (2006) a family friend referred her to the
Los Angeles-based company A&R Worldwide (which also produces the annual
MUSEXPO conference), and soon after she moved to L.A. to work with them and to
collaborate with other musicians. “I’m just starting to work on my own CD,”
said Pearl. “I’ve just written five new songs and I’ll be recording them soon.
Also, I’ve been performing live (with both a band and solo with backing tracks)
at L.A. clubs like the Viper Room and Cinegrill, and in San Francisco at Hotel
Utah and other clubs.”
