Chloe Leighton Named August “Best Vocalist Of The
Month” With Her Song “Chocolate Cake”
By Dale Kawashima
Chloe Leighton, a very promising, young pop/jazz
singer/songwriter & pianist based in Sydney, Australia, has won the August
SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of
her song “Chocolate Cake.” This song is one of 10 cuts which will be included
on her upcoming debut album, Hollywood Romance, which she will release
independently later this year.

“Chocolate Cake” is an impressive showcase for Leighton’s
strong vocal ability, her piano playing, and her intelligent songwriting. This
midtempo, jazz/blues song starts off with a fairly sparse arrangement (piano,
bass and drums), then gradually builds emotion, enhanced by a graceful string
arrangement later in the song. At the core of this song is Leighton’s soulful,
confident singing, which conveys subtle
emotion in the verses and belting power in the choruses.
Leighton, who is 21, was born in Sydney but grew up overseas
in Paris and Seattle, WA. Her father played jazz piano, and he encouraged her
to play piano at a young age. She also learned to play guitar, cello and organ.
Leighton has been inspired by classic artists such as Billie Holiday and Aretha
Franklin, as well as contemporary singer/songwriters Tori Amos and Fiona Apple.
During her high school years, Leighton occasionally
performed recitals and briefly sang in the school choir. But it wasn’t until
she attended college at Sydney University that she seriously began to pursue
music. “I was studying film in college, but some opportunities began to arise
with music,” recalled Leighton. ‘I ended up traveling to Los Angeles to record
with a producer there. But I wasn’t happy with the creative direction (of this
project), so I made up my mind to write and record my own album.”

Back in Sydney, Leighton worked on her debut album Hollywood
Romance with co-producers Lindsay Rimes and Simon Shapiro. “It was
wonderful recording this new album,” she said. “Simon Shapiro is an excellent
singer/songwriter and vocal coach who is brilliant at getting the best out of
me. Lindsay Rimes has produced albums that have done well in Australia (such as
Anthony Snape) and won awards. Also, the album includes some great musicians,
such as Gordon Rytmeister, who is considered the best drummer in Australia.”
With her album due out in about two months, Leighton is
planning to release and promote her CD independently. She is also about to
start work on her music video. “When the album is finished I will be taking the
record to one of the major indie distributors in Sydney and get it into shops.”
Leighton will also be promoting her album via the internet - she already has a
successful MySpace site. “I put up a demo on MySpace last year and the response
I got was so great, it inspired me to record my album.”
