Marcia Barnes Named February “Best Vocalist Of The
Month” With Her Song “Real Love”
By Dale Kawashima
Marcia Barnes, a talented pop/soul singer/writer &
pianist based in Toronto, ON, Canada, has won the February SingerUniverse “Best
Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “Real
Love.” This song is included on her newly released, 3-song demo CD called Born
Lover – Part 1, which has been receiving an excellent response from local
A&R and music publishing execs.

“Real Love” is a soulful, pop/R&B midtempo song, which
combines the elegant, sensual mood of Sade with a more aggressive vocal style a
la Alicia Keys. Barnes wrote this song by herself, and she impressively
recorded all the tracks and sang the vocals in her home studio, using her
8-track digital recorder. She mixed the song at Escarpment Sound Studio near
Toronto. This fairly simple recording of “Real Love” demonstrates that it
doesn’t take an elaborate studio production to showcase an artist – this demo
very effectively showcases Barnes’ vocal and songwriting ability.
Barnes, 22, grew up in an area north of Toronto called
Caledon, where she lived for 14 years. When she was 12, she began taking piano
lessons and classical voice training, and started writing songs. A year later,
Barnes recorded some of her songs in a local studio, and soon after she entered
and won several talent competitions. During high school, Barnes sang with a
jazz band, and she recorded more songs in a jazz/pop vein. Also in high school,
she was a competitive tennis player.
For college, Barnes accepted a tennis scholarship from
Jacksonville State University in Alabama, which she attended for two years.
However, she decided to focus on her music and moved back home to Caledon.
Barnes began performing there with a six-piece band, and in 2006 she recorded
and released her debut CD, My Latin Roots (her mother is from Colombia).
Then in 2007, she released her second CD, This Is My Soul Talking.

Both CDs were fairly well received, but interestingly, it is
her new demo CD Born Lover – Part 1 which has caught the attention of
music industry pros. “It’s been my new demos that industry execs have liked,”
said Barnes. “The songs are stronger, and I’m proud I was able to record these
songs by myself at my home studio. I will be recording 12 new songs, which will
be included on my next full album” (to be released later this year).
Currently, Barnes is busy working on her next album, meeting
with music execs, and performing live in Caledon and Toronto. Assisting with
her career is her mother, Susanna Barnes, who is her manager and co-writer on
some of her songs. “I’m excited about my musical direction, and the response
I’ve been getting,” she added. “I would also like to find a fantastic producer,
to work with me on my new album.”
