Pop/Classical Artist David Ask Named June “Best Vocalist Of The Month”

By Dale Kawashima

David Ask, a talented, pop/classical artist based in Nashville, TN, has won the June SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of the song “Breakthrough” (written by Robin Welty Pisciotta). This song is the title cut from his new 10-song CD, Breakthrough, which he released independently last month (May 2008).

“Breakthrough” is a graceful, uptempo song, which is reminiscent of the very melodic, uplifting AC/pop singles that Josh Groban has recorded. This song starts intimately with a sparse piano arrangement, and then gradually builds into a full, orchestral-style arrangement. “Breakthrough” provides an excellent showcase for Ask’s rich, expressive vocals, and it also features stellar production by John Pisciotta, who is known for his work with Vince Gill, Christopher Cross and other artists.

Ask was born and raised in a small town named Glenwood, in central Minnesota. Early on, his mother (who was a fulltime music teacher) introduced him to music, and Ask was also inspired by such diverse artists as Steve Perry of Journey, Michael W. Smith and Luciano Pavarotti. Notably, he has taken vocal lessons since he was 15, and he has trained as both a classical and pop vocalist.

For college, Ask attended Belmont University in Nashville, TN. It was during this period that he recorded an album with his sister Kirsten, which was a duet, gospel music CD that sold 3,000 units. Then following college, Ask sang with the Nashville Symphony Chorus for two years. Years later in 2006, Ask released his first solo CD, Rest, which consisted of all traditional hymns.

It was in mid-2007 that Ask decided to record a more contemporary pop album, called Breakthrough. “I consider this a pop album – pop with a classical edge to it,” he explained. “I worked with producer John Pisciotta, and we chose 10 songs to record for the album, including the title cut ‘Breakthrough,’ Journey’s hit ‘Open Arms’ which I sung with Italian lyrics, plus ‘Nessun Dorma’ and ‘Con Te Partiro.’”

This album was recorded over the past eight months, and it was released last month (May). Currently, Ask is excited about promoting the album as an independent release. “We’ll be marching ahead independently anywhere and everywhere, and we’re also teaming up with management and publicity,” he said. “In addition, I will be performing more concerts, both locally and national.” Lastly, Ask mentioned that he is also now attracting interest from some major labels, so there are many good options ahead for Ask and his new album.
